Toe caught and he went down hard and fast, face plant.

When we totaled our previous Ultra in Oct '08, we both had ff helmets which were written off. My HJC imploded, both were scraped raw but we survived, with a Grade 3 concussion and full amnesia of the crash, but live and bik'n again. He stayed with the Arai Profile and I went to a Shoei.

Up until last year I owned a HJC SYMAX helmet. When they came out with the new HJC SYMAX II last year, they made some major improvements, one of which was going to a metal latching system for the chin guard. Very heavy duty compared to the previous plastic setup.

Your story and the story about the SYMAX II helmet makes me feel much better that I upgraded to the SYMAX II now.

Did it stay together, or result in any facial or jaw injury?

Answers may steer me in a direction of full-face or modular. Thanks.
few years ago, full face modular plant @ about 45mph....helmet cracked...no facial damage (though many think if would have been an improvement)....

The Arai RX-7 is a great helmet, originally designed for road racers if I remember correctly.

Arai just came out with a new FF helmet called the RX-Q, which was designed for street riders that ride in a more upright position (ventilation designed for specifically for upright riders). It looks like a top notch FF helmet, with great ventilation, along with every bell and whistle that the top of the line Corsair possesses. Not cheap, but probably one of the best FF lids on the market.

Saw this on webbikeworld - they selected the Nolan N43 modular helmet as their product of the year. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motor...met/nolan-n43/
