A baseball cap will offer protection, being somewhat of a smartass, but you get the idea.

The issue is the force of impact.

I have a very expensive Shoei FF helmet which won't help a bit if I hit an oak tree at 75mph.

Do what you like, it's your life.

 

Most of the testing done to "Certify" a helmet is done at very low speeds so at highway speeds it really won't matter. Instead of busting your grape it will just transfer the force to your neck so take your pick.

Well I have both their DOT and their non DOT trooper II so I have used both, from that I would say that the shell is the same as the DOT and would offer some protection. The non DOT helmet is the only helmet that I wear, if I wear one. Sooooooo

Short answer "Yes" ,but of course it is still a half helmet so you can not compare it to a full face.
