Clutchless shifting! Who doesn't and why not?
#81
Althought technically you don't need to use the clutch to shift, unless you're racing why wouldn't you use it just to not stress the box? When racing we'd match revs all the time and skip clutching, but we're just cruising on the street. I'd rather eat up a clutch than have to refurbish the box. Just my $0.02 though.

I'm sure the majority agree. That is the most sensible approach.
I think we were just so snowbound and bored, that we were debating if "you can" or cannot. You know, kinda like "splitting hairs" for the sake of wasting bytes.
Apples should use the clutch unless you are racing or experimenting. Even then it don't do much for you to avoid the clutch. But can be done fairly safely.
Oranges should use the clutch only when coming to a complete stop. The millions of miles they do justify the cost savings of clutch replacement.

no clutch - hhmmm, synchronizer issues, shifting forks
I didn't use the clutch way back in the early '90's on my 600cc Kawasaki.
started popping out of 2nd gear, pfft no problem, just don't twist much throttle in 2nd,
then 3rd, and 4th
lost 2 months prime riding season because the 2nd gear synchro, 3rd gear, shift forks bent, drum burnt, rounded teeth on 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
it was a cool $1,000.00 to learn how to use the clutch.
as the service tech explaine dit to me after the rebuild.
pull clutch all the way to the bar
ever so gently shift into next gear
release clutch

Clutchless shifting is not recommended for any clutched transmission, big rigs included! Does it happen and can it happen, yah,,,,,,but not a one of the builders of these transmissions would recommend it. The clutch is there to facilitate smooth meshing of the gears and an impact free engagement of the drive line. Use it for the longevity of your driveline.
Hmmm, ask a real truck driver if he shifts with the clutch with his 18 speed!

shift without the clutch
steer without the handlebars
park without the side-stand
of course!
(imagine how much faster a Harley would be if you chopped off the handlebar & riser!)

I guess I'm missing something here, could you explain how you match rpm's on your bike and it sounds like an automatic without using the clutch? Thanks in advance, never know when a clutch cable may break.
