Timberline tent, Thermarest pad, MSR whisperlite international stove, collapsible
candle lantern, head lamp, parachute cord, collapsible chair, tarp ( a light one ), collapsible water canteen, plastic ground cloth cut to the shape ( bit smaller than ) of the bottom of tent. Sleeping bag that packs small. Small soft side cooler ( load it w/ gear riding, ice in it at night ) food that only needs water to cook. And very very hard booze. That is how I go. This stuff will pack down fairly small.

Any suggestions on a good compact tent and bag for the bike (and maybe a sleeping pad)?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sleeping pad=Oregon Bedroll
http://www.oregonbedroll.com/
Tent=Eureka Backcountry 1
http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___23890
Sleeping bag=Feathered Friends "Swift" 20 degree down bag
http://www.featheredfriends.com/Pica.../20Degree.html
Tent and bag go in saddlebag, Bedroll straps on back of bike..
Works for me
google Hennessey Hammocks. I've used one for about 10 years backpacking, kayaking and motorcycling. Killer gear, small light, weather/bugproof. Never yet found a place I couldn't hang it. that and a lightweight down sleeping bag in a small dry bag, perfect!
Try REI.com they've got some great stuff. Also there are some great deals from SierraOutfitters.com. Good Luck.
Some good advice from the guys posting. I would only add, get a tent you can stand up in. My first tent was a supposed two man tent that was only about 3 feet tall. It's a pain in the azz changing sitting down. My new 4 man tent is tall enough to stand in and packs up to nearly the same size as the two man. And get a little camp dust pan & brush. they make then in a mini 4 inch size. I don't like rolling around in grit and dirt when I'm trying to sleep.
About 50 foot of nylon rope, 2 10 x 14 ft tarps or larger, one for the roof the other for the floor, tent stakes and 1/2 inch conduit, cut to loadable lengths with emt couplings, Make just about any shelter you want. who wants to be in a 6x6 tent all day when it's raining? Once you have this set up the friends will come find you, i.e. free beer, food, grillin, etc. by far the most versatile, when its not going to be that cold.
I go backpacking and if you are looking to get gear I highly recommend REI. You can return anything for almost any reason at almost any time if you are a member. The gear that I use is:
Sleeping bag:
The North Face Cat's Meow +20 Sleeping Bag
http://www.rei.com/product/763623
Tent:
REI Quarter Dome T2 Tent
http://www.rei.com/product/761893
Sleeping mat:
Therm-a-Rest ProLite Sleeping Pad
http://www.rei.com/product/780988
All the gear I listed is light and if you are a co-op member with REI you can get 10% back at the end of the year. Also, if you are going to buy from REI, BECOME A MEMBER A FEW WEEKS BEFORE BUYING!!! They send out coupons like crazy. Sign up for the e-mail lists and you'll probably get a 20%-30% off coupon in a few weeks.
