2010 Sportster Forty-Eight
#41
The common theme in this thread seems to be approval of the basic machine, & dislike of a few particulars. This criticism of the 48 strengthens the great tradition of Harley Davidson riders personalizing their rides. Only the family budget keeps me from bringing one home, installing buck horns, pipes, & probably a different seat. So what’s really new?

I enjoy watching all the bike makers work their marketing strategies. Harley was in the unique position of having their ideal displacement, style, weight, and performance in the model at the bottom of the price list--the XL883. Just put the worst seat possible on the bike and you had the perfect tool to bait and switch your customer base.
Eliminating the XL looked stupid on its face. But, now comes the procession "Sons of XL" that all share one added accessory--a bigger price tag. This is not an original idea. Detroit has resorted to it for several years.
I like the 48, and the Iron, and the Nightster, and the --------, or whatever will be next in the procession. But, like Detroit, Harley may find that this is not the route to work out your salvation.
