Personally, I would plan ahead (or try to) and aim for a KOA (or any other) campground. Cheap, decent, relatively safe.

I've slept in a couple of rest stops while travelling in Oregon. I had a pop up camper on my truck. The worst part I found was the Truckers who pulled in at all hours of the night and the refrigeration motors that ran all night long on the reefer trucks. It was not a restful sleep at all from all the idling trucks. But, I never felt unsafe or in danger.

Take a look at KOA....Kamp Grounds of America. They have some very nice facilities........nice bathrooms with showers, some with little cabins, all with good tent sites. Nominal fees. Some even have gasoline and a convenience store on site.

I do occassionaly spend the night in a rest area in my travel trailer, but would not consider it in a tent. Maybe 20 years ago, but not today...

Sorry to all the out of staters here on the forums but this poll applies to United States Only. I know some of the rules that apply to places like Europe.

Do you camp at rest areas?
Would you go on a 2 day with your spouse ride with 9 other people that made there night time stops at rest areas?

Is it legal to pitch tents at rest areas?

I heard this about our up coming trip in August and I am thinking I will bow out.

Yellowtang might do a search, but I remember someone on here talking about website for motorcycle camping. Shows camp ground's that are cycle friendly in all states. There are alot of camp ground's where you can pitch tent and still have shower's & restrooms for a small fee.

I feel the same way here in Montana.

A lot of rest areas are pick up areas for gay men. If that's not your cup of tea I would avoid camping at a rest area

I think I would steer clear of any rest stops then. Why couldn't your group camp off the side of the highway or down some road instead.
