Default UPDATE! Loud exhaust tickest anyone?

I don't know about you guys, but here in Connecticut they are going crazy with exhaust laws. West haven will fine you $250 for any aftermarket exhaust they deem loud, my co-worker got pulled over in Wallingford friday night at 8:30pm, just going by himself to get a ice-coffee after a hard days work for defective equiptment. He has V&H pipes with baffles and was just cruising, not getting on it. He has 20 days to get it checked for decible reading at the DMV, it passes or he loses his reg. Last night on the news Goshen police now carry decible meters and are ready to start handing out fines to bikers. Even my slip-ons are above the limit.

You know, if you are on a police escorted charity run, they will leave you alone, but on your own forget it.

I know bikes with strait pipes can be obnoxious to many, but baffled pipes should not be an issue.

thats all for now, signed: Pissed in Ct.

I got pulled over, and he mentioned it, but didn't give me a ticket. He actually pulled me over to check my taillight, and then just brought up the pipes when he looked at them. He didn't even ask me to start the bike or anything.

What do people do that buy these 60,000 big dogs and OCC bikes that have custom exhausts that cannot be replaced with a stock quiet system? I don't even want to hear that they are exempt.

Been visited by the police not once, not twice, not three times, but four times due to loud exhaust. Currently running Screamin' Eagle II pipes which according to my local PD are entirely legal and well below the limit for noise in my very **** retentive municipality. Cops got called and were required to respond. I got a "sorry to bother you" and "nice bike" and then the cops moved on.

But, based on the number of calls I understand the local PD gets, noise is a major issue to "civilians" and they seem to pay little mind to what may meet the letter of the law.

In other words, Harley ain't just blowin' smoke when they act very paranoid over noise issues. It's legit.

Where I live, at least, it's not about stock vs. aftermarket, but instead about decibel level. I'd be startled to see local police checking out the brand name on your pipes. I would imagine they'd break out the decibel meter (yup, such a device exists). The can also test by how audible a sound is at a distance. I know cops are being asked to enforce more often, and I know they're getting more calls.

Kansas has no acoustical criteria for maximun volume of pipes, but does have laws in place that require mufflers (baffles). As long as you have operational baffles in the pipes, according to law, volume cannot be an issue.

Let's keep it that way.

There's WAY too much crime here in the so-called 'Big D' for the cops to pay much (if any) attention to bikers. Hell, I rarely even see cops. Good thing cuz I DEFINITELY ride it like I stole it and then robbed a convenience store...

Did the cop check your bud's exhaust with a decibal meter?Did he write down the brand of pipes?
If no to the above, think he can get away with putting the stock pipes back on for the DMV check?
