I knew a guy back in the 80's with an FXS, he played in a band for spending money, so he used his extra cash to send the chrome parts away to get plated in genuine gold. The bike was dark brown and tan, it actually looked pretty good.

For most of us it was cost forbidding back then, let alone now, so I don't think it would set any trends. I like the dark look, but for myself I still prefer chrome, either way, "black will get you back", and "chrome will get ya home"
