Blah blah blah.... I don't hit redline cause I can't stand the smell of burning rubber. If you wanna hit redline do it on something that might actually impress someone, like a V-Max... I did... twice. I'm not trying to dis anybody, but really, this is a silly thread... bring the flames on, I can take it, even on my slow assed fxd.

It's OK to run it up to redline for a brief period of time when tuning. Just don't exceed it or run it there for a sustained period of time. You should be able to build the map for the high RPM areas from the ones below it. You'll get a "carpet plot" if you graph the Lambdas for the results you're seeing and can use it to smooth your curves and extrapolate the higher values so you don't have to run it up there too long. Dynoing a motor is neccessary, but its always a crap shoot. I've seen a lot of them damaged/destroyed on the dyno trying to build maps. Make sure you got plenty of air flow over the motor to prevent overheating and don't go run it to redline on the first pass if it's a new/newly rebuilt motor. Take it up there in stages, checking it after every run, and watch your pressures and temps really closely as you make runs. As the motor runs in it will change your map from what you saw in earlier runs. There's no shortcutting the dyno to save money. It's a very disciplined process to do it right and takes some time. Good luck with it.

Lets see, my red line on my tach starts at 5000, my rev limiter is set at 6200, I hit the rev limiter occassionally. Cheapest way to increase HP is use the revs the engine has.

Varying responses from poke-*** to haul-***. Interesting. I use my tach and i set my rev limit at 6400 rpm(95" 100 HP Dyna) and try to shift at around 6000 or a bit above. It revs way too quick to not use tach, all you do in the 2 lower gears is hit the rev limiter if you don't. My tach/speedo are handlebar mounted so you don't have to take your eyes too far off the road to see them. Why would i want to go that fast? Because i can.

My 95" kicks in at about 6250 on my tach, I don't bang it all the time I know when to shift right before rev limit, if you're doing some strip times, banging the rev limit will kill your times. I like the "because I can" statement truckerdave, to each their own I say, some like stock and some like H.P. and speed, some don't who cares, it's my bike, my ride my enjoyment.
