I've never had an oil burning Harley yet, and I'm on number 7.

If you are losing oil you should see it in burnt/waste form (smoke) out of the exhaust or in liquid form on the garage floor. Just two common examples.

2nd new in 6 months?
God Bless you man and I really mean that.

Always check it hot and on the stand. Don't overfill. Shouldn't have to add much if any between changes.

Mine does leak a little...has since it was new, not enough to have it torn down for.

I think most of y'all are missing his point...

"...it says to CHECK the oil each time before a ride..."

Preventative maintenance is all that is. You don't want to go out on a 200 mile run just to find out that you started out with low oil. That causes more heat build up faster, which in turn causes more stress on internal parts.

We'll discuss vibration issues after you get a few miles under yer belt...

It's a precaution really. Not meant to imply that the engine uses oil, but if any issues happen while riding with the rings or some other internal engine components the best time to catch it is prior to the next ride. I guess that's the argument. Personally I don't check it, I guess I probably should.

Bottom line is, no oil consumption on mine. It all stems from the breakin period and how it was broken in. I hope I didn't open up another can of worms..

77k on my Twin Cam. It doesn't need oil added between changes.
