I will be leaving from NY solo. Would be glad to pick up a group along the way or meet a group in Washington. Any other Solo's are welcome to join me! Should be in June, My dates are flexible. Hope to hear from someone!

I would like to start planning soon to work out details. Any advice from the Alcan veterans is welcomed.

 

The Alcan was in the best shape ever this year due to low traffic and some major maintenance in 08.

To get to the Alcan you have to turn up I-15 in Montana and go thru Calgary, Edmonton then Dawson Creek where it starts.

Unless you are going up to Fairbanks from Washington and then down the Alcan.

We did come across more wild life along the road due to a huge forest fire in B.C.

I meant to say advice from all you Alaskan Highway veterans...

Im guessing heading up the Alaskan Highway alone is a foolish idea, but is it traveled enough where I can just mingle into a group at the start?

 

Been up and down the ALCAN many times but never on a bike. I lived up there 45+ years. Your not foolish for following your dreams and going alone if that's how it works out.
There will be plenty of traffic in June,mostly RV's. Never saw a lot of bike traffic but there is some. I would suggest getting a milepost and planning your trip. It's the size of a sears catalog so you won't want to carry it on your trip but you can make notes for reference.
You will probably be without cell phone coverage in parts of B.C. and the Yukon.
Be prepared to ride in rain and cold. You may hit some 30's but 40's most likely will be the coldest.
Camera,passport,tool kit,tire repair kit,money,mosquito repellent,more money
Think about riding up and taking the Alaska Marine Highway back from Haines to Bellingham,Wa. or take the ferry up and ride back.

Speaking of a tire repair kit, what are the recomendations?
Ive been stocking up on the heavy leathers and have my old army gear for some extra warmth. Should I expect cheap motels along the way, or a mix of that and camping. Im not in the mood to fight some big old mean bear, so Im thinking about sleeping 'inside'.

I'm trying to decide if Alaska is on the menu this year. So far my record is 19,000 miles in one season, but this year might beat it. So far on the calendar I have (right next to Marissa Miller) scheduled:

1. Phoneix - late February
2. Death Valley - Mid-March
3. Sedona/Flagstaff - April
4. Coast to Coast (LA to Kitty Hawk, then north to NYC) -- late May
5. Americade -- June
6. Estes Park, CO -- July
7. Eureka, CA, then back down the PCH to LA -- early August

With the coast to coast this year I'm not sure Alaska will be able to fit into the schedule. Dang ... I need a longer summer. :-)
