Default Ok, OIL DISCUSSION AGAIN.

Amsoil 20 50 all 3
Mobil 1 20 50....can you use for all 3? Is it risky using same oil for all 3
Redline 20 50
Mobil 1 15 50 less expensive, more readily available

Let's leave HD out for the time being. I'm really not sure what they're trying to sell me.

thanks

the lack of any additives that other oils may have allows the amsoil to be used in all 3 holes. Other synthetics have stuff in it that is not good for primary and possibly transmission. amsoil is really the best. Here in fl. I can get it all over the place. I am running their oil filter now. Can go 10K(twice the recommended interval per oil change) with their filter on the bike(whose cheaper now). I suggest amsoil.

Mobil 1 V-Twin is rated for all 3 holes. It's the GL rating that you want for the primary and secondary. (of course you realize that now matter what you had said in your post that this will not devolve into a 9-12 page discussion?)

Have a good one,
Dave

I use Mobil 1 20/50 in the engine, mobile 1 75/90 (going to try 75/140 next time I change) in the tranny, and HD Formula + in the primary. Seems to work well for me.

Default Ok, OIL DISCUSSION AGAIN.

I recommend AMSOIL. I've run it in my bikes for over two years. Read their white paper on motorcycle oils, updated in 2009.

Mobil 1 is very close to amsoil... you can use 20w50 v-twin in all 3 or use it in the Primary and tranny and use 15w50 you can get a 5 gallon jug from Walmart for about $22...

Default Amsoil

Amsoil, is the way to go. Especially if you use their filter you can let the oil go 10K. You can use it in all three holes. I am still of the mind in the primary chain case, use gear oil. AMSOIL also makes a 75/90 Syn Gear oil for that purpose.

When you add the extended drain interval, AMSOIL is cheapest and gives the best overall protection.

As noted, Mobil 1 is the next closest. Most everything else and especially HD SYN does not come close.

Here is a link to where you can order it and have it sent to your home. The filter for a 1684 CC Harley is part number EA0M134 for black EA0M134C for chrome. The oil is: MCVQT-CA - SAE 20W-50, Gear Oil is FGRQT-EA - 75W-90.

The only suggestion I would make has to do with the transmission. I starting using redline heavy shockproof and It is great. Smoother shifting, less noise. IN MY OPINION I would not pick a lubricant for my bike based on convienance (something that can go in all three holes) just a thought.

There is no brand of oil that is "optimal" in all three holes.

"Can use" in all three - ain't the same as - "What's best" for each hole.

Three different methods of operation, each having different demands from the lube.

You have to decide: Do you want what's best for your bike?
or: Do you want what you can "get away with" in you bike?

It's not that complicated.

I use Mobil 1 in everything I own from Lawn Mower to airplane. I have never ever had a oil related failure. I use it in My Fat Bob F150 and VW TDI change it every 15 thousand miles. Best there is and you can find it everywhere.
