Yes, as a matter of fact a lot of the manuf. suggest certain idle times and such for curing this type of paint. Again, they do say 2000* paint, but if you read the fine print, it says it only withstands those temps for short periods of time ,like drag racing use. Ceramic or high temp powder is the way to go if you want it to last.

I have seen them glowing orange at night before. Seriously though, they get very hot , especially during the hotter months.

Here is what I have done to my pipes to blacken them. Took them off the bike (heat sheilds and muffler) sand them with Scotch brite, painted them with first coat of VHT Flame Proof header paint from O'Reilly Auto Parts, let them sit for 20 minutes, baked them in the oven, more light sanding, 20 minutes set time, more oven time, another coat of VHT, more oven time and then put them on the bike. All in all pretty durable too. When I get scuffs or scrathes I do a little light sanding while still on the bike, place some sheild behind the pipe to protect for overspray, let it set for 20 minutes and then let the bike idle for 10 minutes and then take it for a ride. It looks good and is very inexpensive. The paint is rated for 1300 to 2000 degrees. I think this is a VERY viable and inexpensive way to blacken your exhaust. The paint dries flat black by the way.

Now after having said all that I am having them sanded and ceramic coated next week for a more permanent approach.
