They join because they hate the other 99 percent of RUB bikers. It is awesome to ride down the road in a group with the cuts flying. There are good and bad parts of clubs, but it is like always hanging out with your buddies having one hell of a time, who wouldn't want that.

Guys, leave the OP alone for a bit.

@OP: there are as many reasons to join as there are 1%ers. Everybody has his very own reason.
As for 1%ers in Ireland, I can't speak for others, but the Outlaws MC has several chapters there.

Exactlly the way it is.To add,The world and the way it is run is enough to turn some to gangs.Like so many things in life if you have to ask why, don't bother you would never understand the answer.

Well, I can't speak for Ireland today, but for not too long ago, I would have rather seen young people join 1%er MCs than loyalist/republican organizations.

Some 1%er MCs can be racist. Some are all inclusive. Ireland, like anywhere in Europe, can, at its worst, be......emmmmmm.......less than friendly to the immigrant workers from Africa or eastern Europe. As long as the MCs in Ireland aren't involved in any of that kind of rubbish, or the south Dublin heroin trade, then what's the problem?

(I'm from Co. Tyrone, BTW. Moved to the states 20 yrs ago--still go back several times a year.)

I think if you skin back the layers you will find that folks become 1%ers for the same reasons that other people join other types of groups. It could be anything from fraternal organzations to model railroad clubs to the local ladies sewing circle.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not comparing 1%er clubs to the local ladies sewing circle or the Elks Club, at least in function. I do believe that it is the same concept.

People are drawn to groups where they can associate with like-minded people and share common interests it's just human nature. Then when you get into the actual philosophy of an M/C you see the family-type aspects of brotherhood and loyalty (which some people are looking for). Then there is the common interest in motorcycles, not mention that most clubs have a pretty long history and a strong sense of tradition.

At least those things are probably what creates the initial attraction for some people. Then it becomes like any other group - you either fit in or, you don't.

just my $0.02

IMO, here in small town Ind, we seldom hear of the 1%ers (big gangs) and I've only seen one group go though town last year wearing colors...
Our perception of the rough gangs is that they are usually involved with drugs, prostitution..
Like I said thats just a perception. cause we don't really know.
Also like other groups I know not all are the same....There are some MC's that are really good and help others.

People don't wake up one day and decide they want to prospect for a local MC.
It's part of their life, their enviroment they grew up in or grew into. Not fair to say all 1% are crooks or criminals or anything other than law biding bikers. It would be hard for anyone to understand WHY or WHAT makes a 1%. If you grow up in that enviroment have a love and passion for bikes ....
