Do midway helmets, like the HD midway helmet with the removable neck and ear piece skirt, supress the wind noise while riding or increase it, due to the small gap between the ear covers and the ears? I'm thinking about picking up the HD one, but not being able to try it is a pain. While this helmet looks like it would give good temperature protection over the back of the neck and ears, the last thing I'd want is for it to cause more wind noise. Any users care to chime in?

I have a Simson with the straps like you described, the wind noise is a bit less....Oh, the Simson 1/2 helmet sucks!! Fits like crap.
I'm looking at a KJB.

 

I've got an HJC with the removable ear/neck cover. Does a pretty good job of cutting down on the wind noise.

 

My wife and I both wear one. IMO the wind noise is negligable. For longer trips I usually wear a 3/4, but only to keep the bugs off my brow and face. My 3/4 is a little quieter.
