The dealer a few miles from me does salary with no commission. I found out back in 04 when I bought a new bike from them. I like it as they don't try to pressure you at all. They don't sell a bike they still get paid. I had two sales people working with me when I was there with no hard feelings between them.

I guess it makes sense to pay a flat rate to avoid competition, however then the salesman does not care about the final sales price. Hmmm...

One of the local dealers does strictly commission for both sales and parts...The volume is high year round and none complain!!!!

In other sales-driven industries, commission-based pay, in whole or part, is becoming a thing of the past. Why should you hold a loyal, historically productive employee liable for an economic downturn?

The alternative is to create incentives: each X amount of $ in sales earns extra vacation time, greater employee discounts, a week in a company-owned timeshare, etc.

Not sure if a HD dealer has the revenues to support internal incentives like that, but it's a way to keep sales staff loyal, supportive of each other, and focused on the bigger picture, not just the single pay-period.

Draws typically mean it's a draw against the commission. The dealer in my town doesn't pay commission. The sales people work off salary.

Two local dealers here. One pays salary and a cut on any add-ons that are part of the deal. The other dealer pays commission on the bike and the add-on parts. When I bought my 09, the salary salesman couldn't have cared less if I bought or not. The commission salesman was a little more hungry and worked harder to make the deal.

They probably pay them something like minimum wage, plus a percentage of any sale. Say, 10 % of anything over what the dealer has to pay for each item. At least, that what I made when I sold cars for a short while.
