Default Get my kicks on Route 66?

I'm thinking about taking a few weeks off next year and riding the original Route 66. I'd be heading out of NW Ohio and picking it up somewhere around Missouri, I think. So, I was wondering if anyone has rode all or a portion of it. Could you share some highlights or just give me your overall opinion if it's worth doing. Places to stop and eat, places to avoid, etc. Don't know much about it at all. Thanks guys

i came across this a while back and thought that it sounded like a good time. since i don't live too far from new orleans, i would have to do it backwards, but unfortunately, time is not in my favor. maybe one day.

easy rider route

One of the guys on the model airplane forums, is planning on riding his 1948 Indian Chief from Michigan out through the western states on route 66. I know he is also planning some side trips. Should be fun. Lots of history.

If you're coming from NW Ohio why are you heading south? Had a buddy in Ada and the ride down Rt 30 to the greater chicagoland area is very nice. You can take Rt. 30 across Indiana, catch I-394 to I-80 and go west to Joliet. From there you can catch Rt 66 and your only 30 miles from the actual start in downtown Chicago.

i will be traversing the country from ny to cali and back. many stops along the way. i will be hitting parts of 66. i have learned one thing from reading all the rt 66 info. learn the route, and plan ahead. the route meanders on and off and will take longer than you think. i like to fly by the seat of my pants, but i am learning as much as i can about the various routes well in advance of my trip. the GPS will be on hand for the unexpected rerouting should i become temporarily disoriented. i have been known to be a member of the Fucrwee Tribe on occasion.

when are you planning your ride.

i am looking at 30 days in may/june/july time frame. my biggest concern is that the divide roads are open up by Estes, and Independence Pass Colorado.

Route 66 through Oklahoma is a hit and miss in some places. The highway is a bit rough for motorcycle riding West of Oklahoma City.

My bad! I'd pick it up at the beginning in Ill. Don't know when I'd leave. I'm really interested in seeing old structures along the route as much or more than the scenery. Like the thought of eating in diners too. Hope momma is up for it. If not, I've got ways to make her want me out of the house for a spell.
