I live right off of it...whats left of it....in Waynesville, Mo. Something about I-44 makes some crazy weather patterns in Missouri so you'd better be ready for anything. I'm from the St Lou area and still can't get over how crazy the weather here can be....snow one day and beautiful 70 degree weather the next...and thats in April!! So it can be fun but traveling on I-44 can be dangerous as well....lots of idiots on this highway and lots of accidents. Just be careful.

Every time I see one of these threads, I get the bug to ride it. While a young Marine in December of 1961, I hitchhiked Rte 66 from OKC to Needles, on my way from NATTC Memphis to Portland. I'd really enjoy doing a repeat on the comfort of my bike on as much as is still navigable.

As a side note, one of the original Rte 66 roadhouses, Barney's Beanery in West Hollywood, is now a great sports bar -- lots of memorabilia.

I know what's at Waynesville. Fort Leonard Wood and I'll never forget it.

my ride this year will be solo. the OL would like to go, but i need a solo break. i will have camera in hand. my kids dubbed my trips as -One Man, Two Wheels and One Lens. i too am interested in the older structures, and historic aspects of the run. The HOG ride sounds interesting, and if it is set for 2011, i may make it with the OL aboard for some of it.

Yep, this is the best section and it contains the longest uninterrupted stretch that remains. When I did the trip in 2004 I found it to be the best part of the trip hands down. If you google Route 66, you will find many websites that discuss the road and can find some good books and maps.

Williams, AZ is a great Rt. 66 town. Oklahoma Rt. 66 is greatly overrated.
