Default Oil and filter change on HD's

This is a general question for all HD's. I change my own oil and filter. I've been doing this for a while now. One of the things that gets me is, each time I change my oil and filter I say to myself. This time I'm going to spill not a drop on the floor!!

Of course that never happens and I always end up cleaning something up from a spill. Especially changing out the filter.

So does anyone have any new method or old I have not heard of to keep it clean? I'd like to know!

Please share your ideas.......

I actually don't have much of a problem when I do the engine oil and filter. Drainpan fits well enough under the bike on a service lift to catch it from the drain AND from the filter.

The one I have a problem with is transmission oil - with where the drain is relative to the lift when I'm working on my bike I can't get fit the drainpan in to catch it! I'm looking for a better plan than trying to catch it with an empty oil bottle.... [&:]

I put a drain pan under the bike and use a waxed paper or plastic plate under the oil filter (to keep it off the bike) and run it in the pan.
Works for me.

Cut off the bottom of an empty 2 liter bottle and cut a section out of the side where you can fit it around the filter and up flush with the filter mount. Make sure to leave the cap on the other end (which should be facing the front tire) and that should do it!

If you have an EVO you could do like I did on my chopper I made a bracket that moves the filter to a better location and in to a better air flow doing this also makes the filter work as a bit of a oil cooler.

Eureka! Part of a 2L bottle may be the answer to my transmission drain plug quandry as well![sm=bounceybounce.gif]

So that's what I've been doing wrong.......

I've tried the 2 liter bottle with the cap facing away from the filter and I still always make a mess. I make a bit less of one since I smartened up and put the bike down on it's kickstand rather than leaving it on the jack....
