Oh yea, forgot to mention, if you stuck and the fob isn't working, open it up and wiggle the battery, corrosion forms between the battery and contacts, when it gets weak it can't bidge the corrosion but wiggling it can sometimes get you home.

i refuse to change that battery out until it absolutely needs it. it is too easy to punch in the code if the fob battery dies. then i will get a battery.

Yeah, tell me about it. Mine went dead right as I was leaving on a ride with friends. The bike was only 3 months old. It's hard to tell how long that battery had been in the fob.

What year is your bike?
I have the HD Security System on both of my 2003 models (a FatBoy and a WideGlide) and I don't use the system on either of them.
I believe on the newer models you have to use the system and FOB (or whatever it is called), but on the older models if you don't use or 'set it' it's just the same as not having one installed.
I just threw my FOBS in a box (after marking which goes with each bike) and never use the security system. You can disconnect or swap out the battery, or do whatever you want, and you don't have to worry the system 'locking you out'... If your FOB battery goes dead, your bike could care less...

i could see worrying about it if it were something that could leave you stranded out in the middle of bum-f*ck nowhere waiting on a ride. but, if you just take a couple of minutes to learn the procedure, you could just punch in your code, stop at your nearest s-mart, at your convenience, and pick up a new one. i just see it as wasteful. (not that i've never wasted anything on my harley )
