I tried riding a 650 BSA up a mountain once a long time ago.Got stuck in a muddy rut,it took me half a day to round up a couple of buddies to help me lift it out.Learned a lesson that day.

Feb, 1936, My Dad, Franny and Ralph Kappenman, left Blackduck, Mn, for Flandreau, SD, on 3 flathead HDs, chains front and rear.
They had 'heat housers' on 'em. You had to crawl in over the back end, kick start it, then rock it off the rear wheel stand to get going. It had slits, where you could stick your foot out, to stop.
It was well below 0 when they left Blackduck, and remember, this too, was well before paved roads, snowplows, etc.
Took them 2 long days, it would take you 6 hrs or so, in a car, now.
Shovel, Push, Pull, N Drag.

In the late 50's and early 60's, Dad used to take us down by Sioux Falls, to watch my uncle and others, hillclimb, with PANHEADS !!!!! Jus' like in the pics you linked. Then there were Enduros/Scrambles, with Sportsters.

You MIGHT enjoy this:

PSST, check out the "BACK N THE DAY" attire.
