As I said, all mine were way under the manual spec of 55 inch pds. and the bike was only 2 years old. I was askert to tighten them up to spec less the wheel be thrown out of true. Only went to 40 on all of them.

Not sure but I have a feeling if I took it to the dealer they'd probably use the ping tuning method rather than a torque wrench.

I wonder if grandaddy on his '36 hill climber worried about this kind of stuff.

I'll bet he did. Half way up a mountain on one of those things is a bad time to have a wheel come apart.

I know this is an old post but I wanted to add my 2 cents. I have built wheels for the US Cycling team and we ALWAYS use a spoke tensionmeter by Wheelsmith. I think they are just under $200 now. How many people don't torque their heads when building an engine. Not too many if they want it to last. Using a tool doesn't make you a bad mechanic it makes you a good one. Compare a wheel built to known standards checked with a tensionmeter and one built by "hand", you will find that there is no comparison. I have a Fasst adjustable torque wrench and believe that it is the tool of choice. Don't think for a minute that the pro teams use the "ping" test.
