Anybody know about CA Smog rules for bikes?
I heard someone mention something the other day about some new smog laws coming in Calif for bikes 2000 and newer? I could understand the smog police having some fertile ground concerning bikes that came equipped with catylst mufflers, but I cannot see how they could really regulate a bike that never had any kind of real (catylst mufflers) smog equipment. This really tweaked me hearing about legislation that in reality will little to no affect on air pollution. Anybody with info please elaborate. thanks in advance.

Here's what I know about it ... the proposed bill is called California SB435.
** 6/2/09 Update: California State Senator Fran Pavley a few months ago made herself motorcycle public enemy number one in California after she introduced legislation that would have required smog checks for all motorcycles of model year 2000 or newer. The bill proposed to start enforcing the measure in 2012, but that has now been changed.
The proposal has been amended to authorize police officers to fine bikers who have removed catalytic converters, instead of requiring the emissions testing. The senate approved the amended bill which now goes to the state assembly. If it passes there, the Governors signature is all that will be needed to make it law..
In reality the cost of policing the original measure, in relation to the minuscule amount of pollution a motorcycle puts out, just did not make sense when the two factors were weighed out under the original plan.
So under the new proposal, the police will now be able stop and fine bikers with allegedly modified stock systems. This is worse then the smog bill proposal. How are we supposed to prove to a police officer that our smog system on the motorcycle has not been tampered with? This notion is absured and puts too much discrestion in Police officer hands.
AS of today (from the AMA website): Action Alert
Information Bulletin Senate Bill 435 (motorcycle emissions testing) will not be heard again during the 2009 legislative session! California Senate Bill 435 (Pavley, 23rd District, D) is no longer scheduled for a hearing during the 2009 legislative session. The bill has been turned into a 2-year bill by the author and may be brought back up in the 2010 session.
Thanks to all the riders who took the time to contact their representatives. Your voice was heard loud and clear by the state legislature.
So for now we're safe

This information is what I was looking for...thanks
Sounds like we have time to contact our elected officials and let them know IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that any further pursuit of this type of garbage legislation will earn these people a pink slip (with a lay-off check) come the next election. The power of our votes need to be made use of. Come on and lets all join in the effort to SHUT-DOWN this kind of crap! Maybe some rallies held at the capitol with thousands of bikers might get their attention too. California has alot of bikers..and we need to give a show to these legislators we are not having this. Please add ideas etc. thanks
