I have been using “Battery Tender Plus” for years on my bikes and seldom used classic cars and it works great!

1+ for battery tenders. I have been using them for over 15 years and never had a problem. Before there was smart chargers we used a trinkle charger hooked up to the garage door opener light. Charged the battery for 5 minutes each time the door went up or down. Worked but tender is 100% better. Plug it in and forget it until spring.

Default Battery Tender Wiring

I just bought a Harbor Freight tender for $4.99. Question is... My '02 FLHRC-I has a factory installed harness for the tender. My voltage meter doesn't tell me which lead is positive and which is negative. Anyone know whether the positive lead is the insulated one? (vs. the exposed lead when the harness pins are uncovered. Thanks!!

The only sure fire way for you to tell is to open the battery cover and confirm which post each lead is attached to.

Mine is wired correctly (can't tell you which wire is which while I;'m at work). But your's could be wired backwards. Which you would then need to fix.

two ways you can do this.
Open the battery cover up , whatever on your bike.
Follow the lead up.
Better way,
hook + side of meter to either exposed terminal. turn meter to 12+vdc, appl minus lead to ground. If you read volts, that is positive. if nothing that is probably ground.
Move + lead to other terminal and repeat.

For those that want to do their own hookup.
You do NOT need to go to battery.
Main terminal on starter (battery cable) hook your positive lead of charger there. Negative lead of charger to any ground (metal free of paint etc).
Will charge battery just as if you went directly to the battery posts.
