Default What Dealers Really Owe Us

I keep reading about good/bad dealers. It would seem the consensus is that the dealerships owe us some thing for buying a Harley from them. I have been on both sides of the dealership counter and cannot for the life of me understand why a customer thinks he is owed some thing. The only thing I think a dealer really owes us is good service and warranty claims. We go to a car dealer and set the deal with the salesman and drive off the lot. Every time we come back it is to the Service Dept. Why do Harley riders feel the dealrship owes them free things just for buying the Harley? I'm sure there will be rebuttals about how a dealer gave this and that but where in his franchise does it say he owes you? The smart dealrships do offer things like discounts on accessories or oil changes. That is just good buxiness but how many of these customers come in the door yelling at the dealer about him owning him a discount because he bought a Harley from him. I have seen this con go on for years. If you have an unsolvab.e problem with a dealership ask for the area representative to come in. If not then call HD and tell them the problem or better still write them a personal letter. Nothing demands and answer like a personal letter. Fossil

The only thing a dealer "owes" us is honesty and to live up to the contract that we have signed. Other than that, it is just good business to take care of the customers when possible.

We all must remember that they do this as a buisiness and not as an obligation.

But.... to each his own

So that's how to do it.....

I thought it was just a motorcycle store. I went looking for a bike, they had one I liked, and I paid for it and left.

I agree but i'm afraid the dealerships in my area offer neither so I don't give them my business.

I get my parts from Bill Sparks at LSHD. He gives me a 20% discount.

I give my service to an indy thats right across the street from the worst Dealership in my area. The indy's rates are competitive. He gets my bike back on the road fast and he also gives me the peace of mind that my bike won't fall apart at 80 mph.

i'll probably find a great deal on another used bike when I make my next bike purchase. I got my last bike (07 Street Bob) for $12,000 it had 22 miles on it. The guy I bought it from won it from the same dealer in a lottery. He bought one ticket for $5.

The dealerships in my area owe me nothing but if they had a reasonable attitude about warranty claims and offered good service then they could earn some of my business.

They don't get it so... they don't get it!

I never figured a dealer (either car or bike) owed me anything other than an honest deal, friendly atmosphere and after purchase service (either paid or warranty).

Good post with good answers!
Not one dumbass even typed "Stealer", or "Stealership"!
I am impressed because they owe us nothing.
Discounts and service are just a bonus.

I think the term "stealership" is more tongue in cheek than anything, because prices are usually so high.

But then again, if it weren't for that people wouldn't come in their doors. You see a high price on something and the majority of people assume that the product must be good or have something to offer. No one owes you anything in life except bills. Everything else is on you and because of decisions you make. Harley is no different. They don't have to sell you the bike or give you credit (some probably shouldn't of been given those loans) and they do it anyway because they want your money.

IMHO, dealers owe us nothing. They already give us the greatest product for our pleasure. Service is their responsibility, and discount is a bonus from them.

They owes us nothing and we in turn owe them zilch but if they want some of the green in my pocket, they'll have to earn it by being upfront and honest. I am happy to say that I deal with Westminster HD and they go above and beyond to keep a customer satisfied.
