I'm like most riders in that the first chaps I bought were cheap, tight and thin. Well after a winter of fighting cheap zippers, snaps that shortly don't snap, and throwing my back out trying to get the crappy things on, I've decided to get a pair with the best hardware and heavy for long distance winter riding. Problem is, what brand to get and is 3.5 oz's heavy enough? I've looked at really heavy 7 oz handmade chaps ($220) which looks like possible overkill, and read good reviews about the 3.5 oz kind that Fox Creek Leathers sell ($99 to $198) and wonder what is the wisest decision. The HD chaps are foreign made apparently which coupled with the high price rules them out for this veteran. Guess the question is what weight to get and where. Thanks Dodger

 

Here are some top quality ones to look at. Myself, I've made the switch to leather jeans. They offer much more protection against a crash and keep the nether regions warmer in the winter.

Checked out the website and love that they are Union made but was looking for a less costly product. $467.95 is a lot but presuming they fit I know I'd be happy. Thanks for your time and opinion. By the way I chuckled about the "Not from SF Bay area" note. I've lived all over Cal. and Northern and Central coast (Pismo) are my favorites...... Dodger

 

I had mine made at Alaska Fur and Leather. They did a great job and to this day I am thankful I had them on when I was T-boned by a van. The chaps never rudded through although the snaps were ground down. Thats my $0.02 worth! Oh and from one Vet to another thanks for your service....

 

I've got Fox Creek's chaps and can confirm they are a quality piece of gear (I've also got a jacket from them which is also quality gear). I believe they are also offering the leather overpants now as well.

 

check with a local saddle maker..you should be able to get a real nice set of chaps made for you ..about $125.00

 

Our first set were made at a tack shop,30+ years ago.Not cheap but worth every penny.

i just got a pair from chilhowee. they are really heavy but they work perfectly. rode in the mountains yesterday in 50 degrees with no sunshine and I was good to go.

 

At $70.00 on sale right now, those are pretty hard to pass up, especially if your like me and only need chaps a couple of weeks a year.
