Default Permit renewal in North Carolina

My motorcycle permit (not endorsement) is getting ready to expire. Just wanting to know if I have to take the written exam and sight exam again. U can't find out sh-t from NC DMV. I need to know if I should prepare for that test, long lines, all the BS. Anyone from NC have experience with this (I would get my endorsement but no way i'm taking that riding test on my 900lb harley, and the safety courses have conflicting hours with work and crazy waiting lists).

The riding test for NC isn't that hard. I took it on a 700 pound 2003 VROD which has the longest rake of any of HDs line up. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course (MSF)the Army made me take was much harder. BTW, the MSF instructor demonstrated everything on HER Goldwing.

As far as the wait, just schedule it for late in the week, like a Thursday. The lines are much shorter.

If all you do is renew your permit, you'll be in this same boat a few months from now. You will do fine. Good Luck

If you can't pass the safety test on the 900lb Harley you own and ride you should really consider getting a smaller bike. Think about it, they have you run through basic maneuvers; in and out of cones, braking, and balancing. Just renew your permit if you are not yet ready to get your endorsement.

i work a 2nd shift and tooka day off so i could take the MSF course and get my licsense we had to do a figure 8 in a box
a painic stop and go thru a curve at a 20 mph or so esay and take a 50 question multi test easy stuff, did it at local college 7 ppl in clas 5 women and 2 guys. Plus cheaper(110.00) than the harley rip off class for 300.00

Default Real Answer

To answer your real question, yes you have to take the written test.

thanks wideopen1967, your the only one that gave me a straight answer. And by the way, I forgot to mention that my 900lb harley has 20" apehangers so I'll wait to borrow a friends sportster to get my endorsement-and the local community college offering the classes has a year long waiting list because of a lack of instructors

If you can't run the course with apes, then you need to take the bars off. What are you going to do in a real situation and need to turn tight? They're cool, but not functional IMHO...you should be able to do everything on the test with the bike you ride everyday...just saying

I don't think you have to take the test again. Just show up and they'll renew it for another couple of years. I drove an Ultra for my road test when I got my endorsement.

Default Tough test

I have never seen anyone pass the driving part of the test on a full size bike.
