The best thing about a knitted helmet is that it is easy to clean. Just throw it in a washing machine. Also it will fit a larger range of head sizes. It is also probably much cheaper then a traditional helmet. And can be dyed to match different colored scooters.

Plus, when your dead it acts as a head holder for the EMT's.
