Default Using Oil

My bike (09 softy) which has 4000km (2400 mile) on the clock is using about 100ml (4 oz) of oil every 1000km (600 mile) and I am wondering if this is normal consumption ? I have stopped topping it up to see if the oil finds its own level on the dipstick, and I am wondering if anyone elses bike (oil) settles below the full mark ?

New bikes tend to use alittle oil until all the seals and gaskets are properly seated.....also as they tend to be alittle "tight" coming outta the factory, you gotta let them find their own groove so to speak........but, that being said, if the oil usage doesn't dimenish by 5000 miles, I'd take to a mech and let them look at it.......

Try keeping it half way between the marks. A topped off tank often suffers from oil being sucked into the emissions system. More of a problem with carbed bikes, but have heard it from fuel injected owners as well.

Absolutely normal. By 4,000 miles in should be less.

alot of guys also pre fill the oil filter 4oz is not all that much and oil filter can almost suck that up if put on dry. Depending on if your lose of 4oz is after you change the oil and checked it.

It is using about 4oz every 600 mile, not just after changing the oil. From the comments above maybe it will settle down ? I will try letting it find it's own level between the full and add lines and see what happens. Is anyone elses bike using oil ??

4 ounces every 600 miles sounds like a lot of oil to me.

Have heard all GASOLINE ENGINES BURN a little oil, its part of the COMBUSTION PROCESS. Around city im fine. But go on a long ride at high speeds, my oil tends to drops a tad. MAYBE an oz., NO WORRIES!!! Bike runs fine and doesnt leak a drop otherwise.
