Using Oil

You are talking a less than a quart of oil every 5000 miles on a new engine. I'm thinking your OK. I would keep an eye on it till 5000 miles and see if it gets better. More than like you will see improvement but a quart every 5k is not really something to worry about. Keep an eye on each of the exhaust outlets and spark plugs, if one gets more reisdue than the other than start to worry. Blue smoke and cruddy plugs are the danger signals.

I have found that after a couple hors ride the oil level is right at the full mark but next morning after cooling and settling it's about 1/4 -1/2 inch from full. Been like that for many, many thousands of miles. In fact I have only added oil once after a looooong road trip and that was only about 4 ozs.

While I haven't noticed it on my bikes (have had several new bikes/new builds over my lifetime), I can understand the theory behind rings not being fully seated, etc.
What I have experienced on more than one bike is the over-fill syndrome.
Many HD's do NOT like sitting at the full mark and the extra oil will go out your breathers into your throttlebody, creating extra carbon buildup in the process.
Try the mid level between the add/full marks and get back to us.
I just bet you will be pleasantly surprised. (common stuff).

Why is this more of a problem with carbed bikes ??
