The nickname fits... "Stealers"

I gotta' vent.... I don't know who coined the term "Stealers" for these guys, but I think I must agree.
I emailed my local HD shop and asked for a quote on my 20K Service. Also wanted new brakes front & back. While there, I thought they could look at why my HD garage door operner option won't program.
$1214.73.
20K Service portion: $750.00 5.5hrs @ $114.00/hr.
Change engine oil & filter, replace primary & trans lubricants. Adjust clutch, clean air filter, replace fork oil, and replace spark plugs. Also they will adjust steering head bearings & retorque all critical fastners, fastners include hand controls, brakes, axles, forks, & handlebars. Also they inspect oil lines, brake systems, wheel spokes, drive belt, controls, electrical switches, idle speed, brake pads, rotors, tire tread, & battery & charging system.
Brakes: $143.00
Diag on the opener: $228.00
Is this for real.?? I'm going to have to go buy a rice burner. I can't afford to ride a Harley.
If anyone knows a good indy in the East Bay (SF Bay Area), I'd love to get a recommendation.
Thanks for allowing me to vent.

I feel your pain on this one. I just sent you a PM with a few things that I have done. I purchased a service manual, and a couple of maintenance DVDs. I have not been to a dealer since my first 1,000 mile service check back in 2006. It has saved me a lot of cash. Now I look forward to servicing my bike. If there is ever something I cannot handle, I've scoped out some great indy folks.
Good luck - and keep us posted!

Don't know why they only call harley dealers "stealers". I wondered for years how people get by with having to call somebody to fix every little thing on the car or house. A bud and me had a saying when it came to fixing something, "What do we have more of, time or money," we fixed stuff ourselves.

This is an old story...there are 3 H-D franchises in a 50 mile radius from my hometown...I always say, we have a "Stealer" a "Dealer" and an "in Between-er"...I avoid the first and last, do most of my work myself, but not all...because sometimes the real Dealer is so fast and reasonable that I let them take care of whatever I need at the moment...
As an example, a few weeks ago, a few friends and I took a ride in the country and just stopped by the Dealer because it was on the way...Along the way, my buddys noticed my brake light was staying on...when we got to the Dealer, they took my bike straight into the shop and checked it out...got me out of there in no time with a $17 switch and only 15 mins. labor out of an already reasonable rate of $55/Hr...
Another friend went in there last week for a detachable back rest setup for a bike he'd just bought there...and they put the thing on for no labor...no, I'm sure they don't do everything for free, but shows that if you do your business there, they take care of their customers...
And if you're ever in southern Ohio, be sure to stop at Baxter's H-D in Gallipolis...you'll see how a Dealership is SUPPOSED to be operated...
