tank sealer peeling off
I was fueling up my 99 fxdx yeterday and noticed what looked like a piece of paper in my tank. I came to realize the sealer is peeling off the inside of the tank. I want to get this professionaly striped and resealed so I dont mess up the paintjob. Where could I get this done? How much does something like this cost?

Same thing happened to my GF's gas tank. I purchases POR 15 and stripped and re-sealed the tank myself. POR 15 is much better than Kreem or other latex based coatings. As far as professionals go, check with an indy mechanic to see if he has done gas tanks before. If he has, cost would probably be $200-$300 in labor.

Happened to my first bike, got a guy to reline it and next year it started doing it again. If you can't get a warranty I would just get a new tank cause you could just be pissin in the wind.

Got a quote for $260+$60 shipping w/ 2 yr. warranty. Thinking about doing it myself with that KBS tank sealer kit for $40. Just gotta be real careful with outside paint.

I have a 99 and it looks like new. Wonder what caused yours to go.
I'll second the POR-15 sealer. I have a 1965 Honda. When I got it it was full of rust. I got their stuff and followed the directions. It was about $50 if I recall. That was 4 years ago and it has held up great. POR-15, DIY.

It's a lot like painting, PREPARATION is EVERYTHING.
I happen to use the Kreem products. BUT when you 'clean' it, I use lead shot from a couple of shotgun shells, to facilitate a GOOD cleaning with the acid. It gets all the corners, etc. Also, the lead doesn't "react" with the acid.
Spend the $ for the 'tank protectant' BEFORE you start, NOT AFTER you have 'pooched' the paint.
$100 to $300, possibly more, depending on who and where you drop it off, at.

Been away from Harleys for 10 years or so and just got back up on a 2002 R-king. Back in the day I had a small bike shop. I had a partner who did crazy airbrush work and we did a lot of paint work. When I built a bike or painted one for that matter we never used a sealant. So why is it so important today? If mine started to peel I would just let it and forget it. Am I missing something here?

A higher alcohol content in gas will cause the sealer to come off. Thats why using gas with more than 10% alcohol content is discouraged. Before you have the tank resealed check to see if the new sealer is alcohol resitent. I haven't used the POR 15 sealer but I have used there other product. If the gas tank sealer is as good as there other products, I'd go with that. They make some tuff stuff. But don't get it on your hands because it's not going to come off.
