Harley's new Synthetic Blend Oil
#21
i love the people that use Syn oil then state they don't have to change their oil nearly as often ...really ??? You keep running dirty oil in your engine? I run syn oil and change it at reg intervals. Run what you want.
The oil rants are really getting old, mostly just old wives tails. I run regular 5w30 in my vehicles and that includes 6 months of cold starting sometimes at -40C, with no problems.

A five year study was done with 74 New York city cabs with synthetic oil. At the end of the five years there was no cost savings relating to engine maintenance with the 74 cabs over the ones using regular oil.
A car engine can go 250 to 350 thousand miles on regular oil and 250 to 350 thousand miles on synthetic oil.
A air cooled mc motor will run a tiny bit cooler on synthetic oil. But it will run a lot cooler with an oil cooler.
I buy the cheapest store brand oil on sale for my trucks, cars and motorcycles. I have driven these vehicles 1.7 million miles without any oil related issues.
I average $l.50/qt. Since 1962 I have saved enough money to pay for several cars/motorcycles. I also go for the cheapest oil filter which is usually a Fram.
That cheap oil has done well in my three Corvettes, one Viper and three Harleys.

this new oil is like the ford motorcraft oil that i put in my truck. not a dino, not a synthetic, but a mixture of the 2.
one of the functions of oil is to keep impurities away from your engine. using synthetic oil does not reduce the amount of impurities in the oil. so by going to longer change intervals, you are running more impurities through your engine. there is a reason they recommend oil changes at certain intervals, regardless of whether you are using dino or synthetic.....

I've been in the Petroleum industry for 10 years. I've learned a thing or two.
#1 Not all oils are created seperate.
#2 Change your oil, REGARDLESS of brand, type, etc...at regular intervals and you'll be fine.
#3 Stop worrying so much.

At the begining of this wandering thread some said they didn't know the viscosity of Harley's synthetics. According to the Harley catalog they are all 20W50. I can also figure out the viscosity on the fork oil. So far I have gotten 105K out of my 1988 EVO using Harley's 20W/50 petroleum 360. The EPA controls the additive package and synthetics and pertroleum motorcycle oils have the same packages. Just keep what ever you lube the engine with changed on a regular basis. Fossil
