Default Manuals: Service vs. Parts (Catalogue)

It's been a month since the acquisition of my first bike, an '09 FXDL.

I'm not a mechanically savy guy, but one of my goals is to not have to take the bike to the dealership for every service and accesory. That said, I am certain that I want to get a service manual for my bike; however, when talking to the dealer about this he also said that there is a parts catalogue which is useful with accesories.

Example, sissy bar on FXDL. He mentioned that there is a light relocation kit and possibly some wire cuting, etc. Information more suited to installing accesories (or to the parts involved anyway).

Question is, are they both worthwile.....or should I just get the service manual and go from there.

Again, purpose is servicing and future accesorizing.

Thanks for the feedback!

In addition to the service manual get the Parts manual (lists part numbers for every part on your bike). This is worth getting, especially if you plan on ordering parts.

For accessories there is also a parts and accessories catalog, usually free but I hear that some dealers are selling them for $6, or you can look accessories up on line.

And don't forget the manual that tells you what all you do that will void the warranty.

Information (and the resultant knowledge) is the least expensive, and the most versatile tool you will ever purchase! It is the basis for all else.

Factory Manual, Parts Manual, Electrical Manual, Choice of after market manual, Treatises on the internet (like HDF, for instance). Acquire, Absorb, Apply! Go for it!

Buy both. The service manual tells you "what to do" the parts manual shows you "how it goes together".

Both are very useful, even if you dont wrench much.

I would recommend getting all three while there still available:
