This is very true have experienced both,I didn't exactly ride dirt bikes in the seventies but I did own some seventies model's as a kid.

I've got a bad back, so I certainly try to avoid bumps. If I can't avoid one I get on the pegs or just raise up on one cheek & let it take the hit rather then my spine.

AT my age it takes longer to go from the eyes to the brain, to the legs to move, than the distance to the bump...

My only question is how the folks with forward controls stand on the pegs?
After horses, bicycles and dirt bikes I never even think about it. On long rides I'll stand up just to stretch my legs. Some times I need a little more than just the highway pegs.

If you go through the MSF course you'll learn this and put it through some practical application too. Stand and pull up slightly on the handle bars and try to come at a perpendicular angle.
