I'd stay away from anything other than leather. I have heard (from an MSF class) that nylon will melt into road rash and cause some serious and permenant damage. No reason to wear chaps during nice weather except for saftety reasons.

i found a pair of jeans at Bass Pro hops that has a layer of brown canvas from mid thigh down and covers the calf. They are for briar protection and other snaggy things for hunters but they are a good summer alternative to chaps and are less than $35. i have gotten many complements on them.

What tosh. There are lots of nylons which are abraision resistant - have been very popular in Europe for years. At the speeds encountered in highway riding, nylons would provide as much protection as you would see from leather - in that they should prevent road rash entirely. The jacket/pants will be totalled entirely - unlike leather, which may be in good enough condition to still wear again.
In race speeds, then, only leather is really tough enough.
In the end its a comfort issue - if its too hot for leather, then a nylon mesh alternative will provide you with protection above that of denim - which has very little abrasion resistance without causing a distraction from being too hot or heavy, that the leather may cause in the height of summer.

Has anyone ever tried a pair of the Draggin' Jeans? They look like normal jeans but have a kevlar lining in them. They are a bit expensive for jeans but priced inline with chaps.

here is thier site CLICK

I've seen those. We were looking for something that would let us were shorts when we get off the bike and are walking around. I just can't take the heat. Finding a place to change can be a real pain in the a$$ and people always look at me funny when I take my pants off standing in the middle of the parking lots.

My girlfriend found these Zone Tailed Denim Chaps. They also have kevlar sandwiched between the denim in the knees and shins.
