WD40 will work in the very short term, but you are asking it to do a job it was not designed for.

I'm in the UK, and I'm not sure if this stuff is available world wide, but a pal of mine who works in Bombardier (aerospace) put me on to ACF 50. No mess, or fuss, and preventing corrosion is exactly what it is designed to do. I live about 1/4 mile from the sea, salty sea breezes are a constant, but my bikes and 30 year old Land Rover are all in great, corrosion free shape.
