GPS Advise
I know this is probably a RePost, but looking for any latest info on GPS, for the bike.
Is everyone mounting on fairing?? Anyone just carrying a handheld & checking it on & off? Is this practical?
What products are recommended. Garmin seems to be the name. TomTom suggests they are special for motorcycles.
Comments???
Not sure if I should invest in one of these or not??

Lots of choices, all personal and unique.
I'd just like to add some of the things many look for are:
1. Waterproof (or at least water resistant)
2. CF or SD Card, no Hard Drive models (altho some folks use them with no problem)
we all know what vibration, potholes, speedbumps, etc, can do to hard drives on a bike after extended periods.
3. The ability to plan routes / trips on ones home PC, instead of being tied to the unit and programming it on that little screen.
4. Upgradeability.....the new Honda Goldwing NAV unit, is proprietary, expensive, and not worth much if you're an experienced or advanced user. $$$$$$$ to upgrade software via Honda
I use my Garmin 2610 model, can be purchased for under 500 refurbished w/ 2yr warrenty.
Lots of other choices, but, what fits your style ?

Garmin seems to be the thing alright.
I have a buddy who's big into "Geo-Caching" He swears by a handheld with an SD card.
I've heard that Sony is coming out with a GPS attachment for their PSP handheld. That might be cool.

I guess I don't get it. I can't help but think a GPS on a bike can be just about as dangerous as a cell phone in a cager. Certainly if a rider is "checking things out" on the GPS while underway he is taking a lot of risks. If he's aware of that and only checks it out when at a fuel or rest stop then I can't help but think a map would do just as well.

I, also have thought this, however, I am reading such amazing things about this technology, I can't help but be curious.
The map may be similar to the 8-track...it played music, but nothing like the iPod.
Anyway, went looking at a few tonight, but still not convinced.
