So the bike im talking about is one of the two i supose?
By the way it is available for sale as is.
The year could be wrong on the title and it is a 1938U model
or it could be that the stamped number on the motor does not show the letter LH on it after the letter U and it is a 1940 ULH????!!!!!
on the oldtimer list could not find a 1940U only a 1938U!
Best regards
Jimmy

It would be 1940 flathead big twin 74" model U
A ULH or UH would be an 80"

First two numbers are the year, letters are the model followed by productin numbers.

Jimmy
Very likely a 1938 with a 1940 engine in it.

Why do you think it might be a 1938 instead of a 1940?

If the number on the engine is 40U4145, it is a 1940. There were no frame VINs back then, and the legal VIN is the engine number, which can make things interesting. Is there any space(s) after the "U" and before the production number?

1940 was the first year for the teardrop shaped tank badge.

Here's some more dope for 1940 from Bruce's Harley Page, http://mypage.iusb.edu/~bbryner/hrlypage.html

Big-Twins:
Flatheads: (4 speed)
U Solo, 74ci, med-compress, (260), $395
US Sidecar Twin, 74ci, med-compress, (1516), $395
UL Special Sport Solo, 74ci, hi-compress, (822), $395

UH Solo, 80ci, med-compression, (187), $415
ULH Special Sport Solo, 80ci, hi-compression, (672), $415
UHS Sidecar, 80ci, med-compression, (163), $415

And for 1938:

Big-Twins:
Flatheads: (4 speed)
U Solo, 74ci, (504), $395
US Sidecar Twin, 74ci, (1193), $395
UL Special Sport Solo, 74ci, (1099), $395 --->

UH Solo, 80ci, med-compression, (108), $415
ULH Special Sport Solo, 80ci, hi-compression, (579), $415
UHS Sidecar, 80ci, med-compression, (132), $415
