You don't have to take it to the dealer for regular maintenance, but someone still has to do it.
No machine (including Harley's) will last very long if normal maintenance is neglected.
What's the old saying? You can pay me a little now, or a lot later.

Sportsters (EVO) have a lot of top end noise regardless. It is kind of like a high pitched sqeaking. I would say it is normal, but don't take my word for it. But you might want to change all you oils and such just to be sure.

whinning sportster
sportys are somewhat inclined too whine like a turbine or pete jackson gear drive when the primary chain is too tight. chain needs to be adjusted when motor is at operating temp. note they will whine in any gear or neutral, especially on decel, if too tight. simple fix great motors

OK - I did a little more looking and now I am having my own private ohshit moment. I think i have no primary oil...so a few stupid questions:
1. is the motor oil different and separate from the primary oil?
2. if i take off the derby cover(large round cover on left side of bike were clutch is) will i need to drain the regular oil first?
3. i f i have driven some miles w/ little or no primary oil how bad have i @#$%#@#$$ up my bike?
