You don't have to take it to the dealer for regular maintenance, but someone still has to do it.
No machine (including Harley's) will last very long if normal maintenance is neglected.

What's the old saying? You can pay me a little now, or a lot later.

Sportsters (EVO) have a lot of top end noise regardless. It is kind of like a high pitched sqeaking. I would say it is normal, but don't take my word for it. But you might want to change all you oils and such just to be sure.

Obviously you didn't read the OP. The noise only occurs in 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear, not in 1st or 5th, and only when the bike is rolling.

Default whinning sportster

sportys are somewhat inclined too whine like a turbine or pete jackson gear drive when the primary chain is too tight. chain needs to be adjusted when motor is at operating temp. note they will whine in any gear or neutral, especially on decel, if too tight. simple fix great motors

As asked above, have U done any service to the bike in the 18 months U've had it... U said U think I have no primary oil....
dude U need to check the oils at least weekly....It doesn't cost $500 to get it serviced every 5k, I've had one $240 with syn oils...the other 4 where less than $200...
