Wait, another trip and we will see another thread.
Atleast he did hurt anyone.

Wouldn't it be prudent to check the trailer out first and ensure it can actually perform the job you're asking it? The waferboard sounds like it would have been a dead giveaway that it wasn't ready. Doesn't sound like you did your homework, but glad all worked out well for you.

Trailering
I had a bad experience this summer trailering my bike.
I have a 6.5 x 16 trailer without a drop gate.
We decided to load them one in front of the other.
The other guy who was going borrowed a 2 foot wide ramp.
Loaded his bike went fine, then I had to ride my 8 foot EG up the ramp and stop without putting my feet down in just 8 feet .
Stopped fine after pushing his rear fender in 2 inches. Cost $550 fender and $255 labor. I'll never do that again.
but he was a good sport about it, didn't let it spoil our vacation in Colorado.
( I have a regular bike trailer for one bike but because he wanted to go we borrowed a trailer to fit both bikes )

Hey, it could have been a lot worse: you could have had irrepairable axle/hub damage!
Tires are another issue (which are usual failures on “home made” lawn mower trailers being towed across country with a load).
