Advice For Greenhorn

I'm as Harley-loyal as the next guy. However, many countries in Europe have a cc limitation on new riders and a progression over several years before you can go unlimited in size. I believe there's a reason for that - hell, they're the experts, right? Maybe get something smaller/lighter for the first year or so. That would also equate to cheaper so you won't be so bummed when you drop your bike for the first time and odds are that you will. Not everyone does, but most do.

I finally decided to take the class as well - last fall - and while I knew I would ride a Harley, I wasn't sure which. I wound up buying a stocked used 883 and think you will find it a fine starter with a quick learning curve. I agree, you may well feel you can handle more pretty quickly, but I am glad that I was able to pick it up easily when I dropped it, and just as glad that I feel how fast I am going. I also think that getting a stocked used bike will give you a much better idea of what you will want to invest in when you get your first new bigger bike - the extras as what add up fast, including shield, gear changes - forward set is best - and saddles, etc.
I took the class and thought I would wait to buy, but a week later I treated myselt to a visit to the dealer and found my baby on the floor waiting for me. Right place at the right time. So, glad I just did it!
Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Personally, get the sportster and ride it around town for a year. Put 10k miles on a bike without leaving town and you're a seasoned rider. Put 10k miles on a bike on the interstate and you're still a newbie.

Just had the same decision
I got my first bike at age 50 this June. I got a Sportster, put 3000 miles on it, and traded it in for a bagger last week. Only had the Sportster for 7 weeks. Just get something you will be happy with long term since it is not easy to sell the bike if you buy one you are not happy with.

I bought a sporty first just because I got a good deal on a used one. The next summer I bought my Heritage. Get what feels best for you and what you can afford.
BTW - Black bikes may be faster but red bikes are the coolest!
