Another important consideration is color.

It doesn't apply to other makes but with Harley's the black ones are the fastest.

Just wanted to let you know so you can make an informed decision. No need to thank me, I am glad to help in any way I can

Get the bike you want the first time. This sportster happens to be what I want. Wanted it since before I knew they were "cheap". Just take things very slow. Lots of people start on a small cheap bike, then when they get there huge new Harley, they are so confident that they have problems with all the power. If you just respect the bike from the start you will have no problems.

Edit: Oh, and if you happen to want a sporty, don't let anyone tell you that you are too big... You are tiny (6'4" 250 LB here).

Default I smell SG

I say you take the plunge and grab a Street Glide I know its not a beginner bike but if you go slow and respect it you will do fine.

Good luck brother, stay safe....

You could just listen to the advice you get here in which case you will have to buy one of every model Harley makes.

They are some really good deals on all models of used Harleys. $10-$12 K will buy a lot of whatever ya decide ya want. Just take your time. You'll know when the right bike comes along.

Test ride, you have to test ride! My demo list would be Fat Bob, Fat Boy and Road King, but go to the HD site and make your own. Welcome and ride safe.

Damn, you guys are great. One little post and 40 minutes later all sorts of good advice. Thanks everyone. Baeseman1 and BobStreetBob, will definately look closer at the Dyna's and FatBob. Dane, I'll introduce myself in the new members area (the part that said "let us know what Harley Davidson you own" made me avoid that area). IronAss, Black is good... as far as your other advice... it starts with the first one.

Back in 1974 when I was 21 I got the bug out of nowhere and bought a brand new Sportster,I had never owned a bike before and only ridden little things so thought I was doing the smart thing.Deal is if you really have the bug and think your goina stay interested get either a Dyna SuperGlide or a StreetGlide.I'm close to your size,6'4" and 200lbs and though the Sporty is a good bike 6 months after I bought it I traded for a 1 year old Superglide and was much happier. Now own a 2003 SuperGlide but really admire the StreetGlide after renting one on the Mainland.
