It's mostly normal..that's why Harley riders have loud pipes. They drown out the ticking/tapping, clanging/banging and the huffing/puffing.

Agree with above posts, louder pipes and twist it harder.

I would assume that it is valve train clatter caused by clearance between the lifters and push rods. Thin covers and it is close to you so you hear it. Since I went to gear drive and adjustable push rods--I now hear gear whine on top of a little clatter. There is a normal amount of noise that comes out of the top end of HD's.

I notice the ticking from the front jug more than the back one but I thought it was just me. Now you got me wondering if there is a difference in volume or just my perception of the volume. I am getting on the Evo in about 45 minutes and I will listen closer for a change. Bike has the same noise it always had so it doesn't or didn't alarm me.

i'm either lucky or deaf. perhaps both. my streetglide is a no tick bike. and a fairing will show up every sound possible as it's reflected right to you.

I think each bike varies a bit as to how loud this ticking is, but generally it sounds like a sewing machine running at high speed. It's normal for this type/design of motor.

Some have gone back to 20W-50 dino oil and heard less clattering if this bothers you that much.
