Reasonable mileage for one day trip??
#21
Forget distance, people obsess about how many miles they can do in a day, it should be about where you go and enjoying the environment you are riding in. If you can find some places of interest and some scenic routes then you can have a great day and do little more than say 120 miles. Make the day about her, you as a couple and the bike making it all possible. Enjoy.

Wife and I have put over 21k on in two yrs and last yr lost 2 months riding time due to Mother and Brother passing.. We only have about 5 month of really decent riding weather her in Ind..
Our riding is usually 2-5hr per time out. Don't have to be how far away but how long. Mostly stay within 80 miles of home but travel in a circles around our town. Biggest part on back road and country, some state roads, but no interstates.
So average speed is usually no more than 45. With the wifes MS she can't be out during the hottest part of the day so from 2-4 we usually take breaks or wait till later to ride..
She still loves to ride, we just plan around her handicap.
We love to putt and look at the scenery.

I've been trying to plan a one day ride for me and the Mrs. to go on. Because of work and family commitments it's not possible for us to go on an overnighter right now. I've got some ideas but I'm just wanting to get some advice on what would be a reasonable distance to ride for a one day ride...I am a newbie so I'm sure I shouldn't get overly ambitiuos.
Thanks, JB

Lots of good comments here. When I take my wife or another passenger I try to do an "out and back” ride. Plan for further distance than you figure you'll do and let it slip to her that you figure on just turning around when you're tired. That way she knows the game plan and will usually mention home before you do. It usually goes something like - do you think its time to turn around yet? Which of course means it is, but she doesn't want to spoil the fun. I always answer that I was just thinking the same thing and we head home. Works great because I don't stress over the route and since there is no real destination, you avoid the are we there yets. I also make sure I stop long before I think I need to, especially if she starts squirmin.
