I too do the shoulder check before changing lanes. These new cars are real stealthy in their appearance and quietness next to you when you least expect it. The hybrids are the worst in my opinion. NO sound except the scraping of metal when you make that unwanted contact. Not like our bikes with the loud pipes and such.

That shoulder check is something I got into the habit of doing a long, long time ago. I had a very similar experience to yours, but it was an 18 wheeler on a downhill stretch of freeway. I had to pull over and puke. It was that close!

I have noticed that many dummies think that when you hit the turn signal it is a signal for them to speed up. ??????????

Same here, I always doa head check on the bike or in the car, and always signal too, which in fact noone seems to do anymore either.

sadly enough, just because of that I sometimes I ride a little slower in big congestion that way people tend to stay out of my blind spot. I only have a lefthand mirror on my bike and I get pretty paranoid about my blind spots. If I try to gun it and run ahead of everyone that always seems to encourage some d-bag to try to "keep up".
