If my cables still operate smoothly, then how do I know when to lube them?

white silicone grease. It is good for displacement of water and will last waaayy longer than WD-40. Same lube recommended for e-brake cable on cars.

I use 3 in1 oil and a syringe.

It lubricates nicely and also makes for a good skin lotion and dessert topping.

I've tried that little aluminum tool that clamps on the top so you can spray the lube in....didn't work worth a damn.
