From that day on, my own personal choice is to use a helmet every time I ride,

The Spyder is not classified as a motorcycle, so no helmet or motorcycle license is required.

It is up here in the cold north. Yet you can't pass your license using one for the test.

That's crazy. I'm sure that if they get popular enough here in the states they'll be reclassified.

I'm in pa too.. and wear a helmet like..60 percent of the time.. I know it goes against the stats.. but back and forth to work and short trips I usually don't wear one.. longer rides.. group rides... bike events.. I do

Here in NJ we have to wear one. I wear a novelty half-shell. As soon as I get across the border into Pa. off comes the helmet. I like the option to choose. I was in a bad crash many years ago, and the Bell Star I was wearing definitely saved my life. It's all about being able to make your own choices. And add me to the list of folks that chuckles a little every time I see a guy in shorts, a tank top, and sneakers, wearing a full-face helmet.

Most of the guys I know don't wear helmets...I figure I'm newbie enough that it actually might be a good idea for me to wear one. I have a 3/4 for hot days and a FF for highways and cold days. Maybe once I get a few years and a few thousand more miles under my butt, I'll try it. But it's kinda silly for me to consider it now after only a year and 10K miles.

I was in that same group of chucklers until I started riding lidless, on occasion, recently.

See my thread about bugs. One could ignore everything about what a helmet may or may not do for you in a crash, and simply wear one for what it does for you when you ride - keep thousands of bugs, rocks & road debris out of your face, seriously reduce wind noise and make it easier to hear... even riding with the face shield open, it changes the wind enough so you don't have a constant blast coming around your sunglasses making your eyes water (or drying them out).

So, yeah... one could wear shorts, a tank top & sneakers, and wear a helmet to keep bugs, road debris and wind out of his face - nothing wrong with that I suppose (although, my jacket & jeans end up as covered in bugs as my face shield).
