The only time my gauge is correct is when the tank is full or when it is empty, anything in between is kind of a guessing game.
+1....and what the others have already said. Go by your odometer and calculate your mpg. Then you will know when you need to fill up.

Had the same problem - the darn thing had the light on for 30 miles and stopped reading mileage to empty and just said LO. I got the the gas station and could only get 5 gallons in the tank... on an 09 FLHX with a 6 gallon tank... yeesh.

Yep, according to my gauge im out of gas at 180 miles. I only can get 4 gallons in on a 6 gallon RK tank. Use the odometer.

Odometer here also for more accuracy. When my low fuel light comes on I have about another 35 miles until empty. 5.5 gal for 6 gal tank.

My 2003 sportster doesn't even have a gas gauge. just count the trip meter. still trying to figure out how many miles I can push my 3.3 gallon tank. I've got it to 140 miles I only had to put in 2.7 gallons. I probably will not push it to 150miles but I know that I can at least get 140.

SO, wheres the problem, is the tank cap gage sending the wrong info to the low fuel light and the miles left gage readout? has anyone tried to fix this for better accuracy?

Gas gauge on my 08 Heritage works fine. When the light comes on bike takes almost exactly 4 gallons every time.

And I've gotten 50mpg on several highway runs. Average is probably 42-45.

If the engine quits running, the fuel guage is "usually" on empty...... SOMETIMES!
