Default Opinion on buying a new or newer bike

I have an 04 ultra,72,000 miles on it.In for repairs twice past month.First for tensioner shoes, now its either a check valve or cam plate, they havent decided yet, had it for a week already. It is fire engine red, beautiful bike, love to ride it.But I am thinking it is at the point its going to need something regularly now.I paid 12,000, they would probably only give me half that or less trade in.But an ultra with about 15,000 or new would last me the rest of my life.i am 60, ride about 6,000 miles a year.Any opinions on this? I hate to lose so much but for me riding and not calling the service dept is what its all about.New or used? Thanks.

Depending on your local dealer. We were in maryville tn when my son in laws 2000 ultra decided to lay down( cam bearings.) they told him it could be as little as $400. maybe as much as $1700 to fix wouldn't know till they got in there. after debate and deliberation. They came out with a brand new 09 blue/silver ultra. They gave him $8500 for his old bike. and they paid $2700 down.
Here is another thing at the bowling green shop a buddy wanted to buy a used bike they said if you owe more than it is worth it has to be paid off and require 10% down on used bikes. on new they can roll it all in and you can have a astronimical payment.
If your bike is paid for you might get $8500 or more to pay for the bike of your choice. I suggest new with extended service plan. after 2 yrs you only have to pay $50.00 to take care of any major issues that may come up. things like wear items they won't cover though.
I plan on a 09 or a 10 trade myself. I just turned over 58,000 on mine. planning on a 6000 mile trip next year. my bike gets around 15,000 miles per year o it so I figure the time of the trip it will be up around 75 or 80,000 on it. good luck hope this helps.

It sounds like your mechanical problems are likely linked to your tensioner repair. Make 'em fix it properly and for free. Then, keep on riding what you have.

Trading for the same payment usually means adding on years. No thanks.

If you like your bike, have some engine work done.
It would be cheaper than buying a new bike and will last a long time.

I'm a "FIX IT" sorta guy. I buy what I like, and I like to keep 'em.
Sorta like 'wimmin'. You know, ya git used to one, hate to have to break in yet another.
PLUS I absolutely find it utterly disdainful, to pay banks, interest. I will, and DO, ride ol' iron, if that's all I can pay cash for.
IMFUO, what I spend in interest, can go a LONG way, to all the wrenchin' and mods I will end up doing, BUT that is me!!!!

Another option, would be an aftermarket, bigger inch motor.

BUT I'd be "aksin" them to investigate their work when they did the shoes. JMFUO, again.

what you might concider the SE103 stage 1 kit on page 503 of the 2009
parts book for $3000.00+ labor. You would wind up with a compleat
overhaul and have more fun to boot

My old 02 is paid for, and has been for years. I HATE monthly payments and will do or ride almost anything to keep from having them. ---I would fix the bike that ya have, and get it paid off. However, it is YOUR money and YOUR decision. Best of luck to you which ever way you go!
